CDHPR Letter of Intent Requirements For:
Improvement of an Established Breed
Breeders interested in seriously pursuing the improvement of their breed, through the introduction of genetic or performance characteristics from another purebred dog breed, must submit a Letter of Intent for consideration into the Improvement of an Established Breed division of the Canine Health and Performance Registry (CDHPR).
To be eligible for consideration by the CDHPR Approval Committee, your Letter of Intent must include each heading listed below (Example: "Breed to be Improved"), listed in the same order as they appear in these instructions, and all information requested under that section.
* Breed to be Improved
1. Provide the name of the purebred dog breed you wish to improve. This breed must already be officially recognized by the United Kennel Club, Inc. To view a complete list of recognized breeds please visit the CDHPR Breed listing.
2. Identify the performance or health problem within your line or breed that you think can be corrected by introducing another breed's genes or traits.
* Your Credentials
1. Your credentials as an owner, breeder, handler, etc. relating to the breed you wish to improve. Any additional credentials or experience relating to the general sport of purebred dogs may also be included.
* Summary of Your Plan
1. Identify the purebred dog breed you want to outcross with (the outcross breed must already be recognized by the United Kennel Club, Inc). Also, identify the specific traits of the outcross breed that you want to introduce in your breed. Specifically, why are you choosing to cross with this particular breed; what specific traits or qualities do you think the outcross breed will add to your breed.
2. Discuss your expected timeline and/or the number of generations you anticipate will be needed to correct the performance or health problem within your breed.
3. Describe how you plan to measure or evaluate the improvement of the dogs produced within your plan. Discuss whether or not you plan to enter your dog into Performance Events; or, if medical testing is needed to measure the improvement of specific health issues, how and where these tests will be conducted.
* Criteria for Success
1. Discuss what your criteria for success will be for your plan and how you will measure the success or failure of your plan.
* Closing Comments
1. Briefly review the breed and performance or health problem you wish to improve. Also, provide any additional comments or issues the CDHPR Approval Committee should consider while examining your Letter of Intent and the validity of your plan.
